Angelides Praises New Laws to Help End the Genocide in Sudan

SACRAMENTO, CA – California State Treasurer and Democratic nominee for Governor Phil Angelides praised the signing of legislation that aims to help end the genocide in Sudan. AB 2941 and AB 2179 would provide legal protections necessary to allow CalPERS, CalSTRS, and the UC to make targeted divestments from companies that do business in Sudan and provide significant benefits to the Sudanese government while only providing minimal benefits to Sudan's citizens.

"Californians have a moral responsibility to help end the genocide in Sudan," said Angelides. "I am pleased Democrats and Republicans have come together to enact this legislation, which will help ensure our state pension funds and the University of California do not unwittingly support the Sudanese government."

"I commend the leaders who united to enact this legislation," said Assemblyman Paul Koretz, the author of AB 2941. "For many years, Phil Angelides has been a leader in the fight to divest from the Sudan and I am grateful for his efforts on this critical issue."

"Our state university and pension funds should not stand idly by while atrocities occur in Sudan," said Adam Sterling Co-Chairman of the UC Student Divestment Taskforce and National Policy Director of the Sudan Divestment Task Force. "The legislation signed into law today represents yet another step forward in our campaign to divest from Sudan and end this genocide."
