Angelides Statement on Governor Schwarzenegger's Veto of SB 927
SACRAMENTO, CA – California State Treasurer and Democratic nominee for Governor Phil Angelides issued the following statement after Governor Schwarzenegger revealed his true environmental colors and vetoed SB 927, legislation to improve air quality at the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. Schwarzenegger's veto came on the same day the California League of Conservation Voters endorsed Angelides for Governor. Angelides' statement is below:
"Once again, Arnold Schwarzenegger has sided with powerful special interests and turned his back on our environment. I am proud to have earned the endorsement of the California League of Conservation Voters and as Governor, I will stand up and fight to protect our environment day in and day out."
Angelides has previously been endorsed by the Sierra Club, Vote the Coast and Clean Water Action. Additional information on the Bush-Schwarzenegger environmental record is included below.
The Bush & Schwarzenegger Top 5 Hits to the Coast; Phil Angelides Will Protect the Coast
| The Bush & Schwarzenegger Top 5 Hits to the Coast |
Phil Angelides' Plan |
| |
|
| Both Support Industrial Development on the Coast; Including Off-Shore Drilling and Liquefied Natural Gas Plants |
- Bush wants to drill off the coast and build liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants along the coast.
- Schwarzenegger embraced proposal to build an LNG plant off the Malibu coast.
|
- Phil Angelides will block any attempt to drill off the coast and only consider any LNG plants after a comprehensive planning process examines how they will impact the coast.
|
| Both Appoint Foxes to Guard the Henhouse |
- Bush appointed oil, mining and timber industry executives and lobbyists to oversee those industries.
- Schwarzenegger appointed three of the worst Coastal Commissioners, according to the Sierra Club.
|
- Phil Angelides will appoint only highly qualified Coastal Commissioners, people who have appropriate professional experience and personal commitment to coastal protection.
|
| Both Cut Environmental Enforcement |
|
- Bush cut funding for the National Ocean Service, the main federal agency in charge of protecting America's coastal areas and habitats.
- Schwarzenegger cut funding for the Coastal Commission, the main state agency in charge of protecting California's coast.
|
- Phil Angelides will make coastal protection a top priority by restoring funding to the Coastal Commission, and funding for the state’s coastal enforcement program.
|
| Both are in the Pocket of the Oil Industry |
- Bush is #1 in the country in taking money from the oil industry. He has done nothing to reduce America’s addition to oil; he constantly beats the drum for drilling in the ANWAR and off the coast of California.
- Schwarzenegger is #2 in the country in taking money from the oil industry (trails only Bush). He has no plan to reduce our addition to oil and opposes Proposition 87.
|
- Phil Angelides has a plan to reduce California’s oil dependence by 25% over the next decade, and supports Proposition 87.
|
| Both have No Plan to Protect the Coast |
- Bush supports off-shore drilling, LNG plants, and sides with the special interests instead of protecting the coast.
- Schwarzenegger uses the coast for photo-ops but will not take real action to protect the coast and instead sides with the special interests.
|
- Phil Angelides has a comprehensive plan to protect the coast, Coast Guard, which will fund coastal preservation, permanently ban drilling, reduce beach closures due to pollution, and require that lobbyists disclose their contacts with coastal commissioners.
