Angelides Statement on SB 1128
SACRAMENTO, CA – California State Treasurer and Democratic nominee for Governor Phil Angelides commended the signing of yet another piece of Democratic legislation – SB 1128 (Alquist), which will protect children and other vulnerable populations against sexual predators. Angelides supports SB 1128 and the Jessica's Law initiative on the November ballot and has authored a comprehensive plan to protect California's children and families from sexual predators.
"As a husband and the father of three daughters, I will do everything in my power to protect Californians from sexual predators," said Angelides. "On Governor Schwarzenegger's watch, sexual predators have been allowed to live without supervision near schools and parks. I will put sexual predators behind bars where they belong and will ensure that those who have been released get the tough supervision needed to protect our communities and our families."
For three years, Governor Schwarzenegger has failed to take real action to adequately protect public safety. The Schwarzenegger administration has:
- Failed to notify local law enforcement about placing paroled sex offenders in their communities, in too many cases;
- Placed paroled sex offenders near Disneyland and other amusement parks;
- Let dangerous sex offenders escape parole supervision by not providing required hearings and allowed parole violators to remain free even after they violated parole and committed new crimes;
- Arbitrarily capped the number of paroled sex offenders subject to intense supervision, leaving dangerous offenders to live in many communities without intensive oversight.
Phil Angelides will not wait until the final weeks prior to an election to act. Angelides will work from day one of his administration to enact his comprehensive plan to protect our children and our families from dangerous sexual predators. To read Angelides' plan, click here.
